Natural stone and ceramic tile showers in Pittsburgh can be plagued with soap scum and mildew. This can seem like a losing battle and consumer products just don’t seem to cut it. Even worse if you clean your natural stone shower with the wrong cleaner — you could do thousands of dollars of damage to the stone. If you’re a housekeeper or a homeowner with a natural stone shower in Pittsburgh, or just losing a battle with soap scum, you will want to pay close attention to these helpful solutions:
1. Bar soap is a problem. If you’re a homeowner you have the easy task of just throwing away or at least no longer using bar soap in your shower. If you’re a housekeeper you need to inform and convince your client to no longer use bar soap. This can be touchy so be careful how you break the”GOOD” news. Body wash is a simple solution that wont leave soap scum residue. But its simple NO BAR SOAP = NO SOAP SCUM.
2. Make sure you are using appropriate cleaning agents. I strongly suggest a shower cleaning kit from MB Stone that has everything you need to maintain and keep your shower looking great. You can buy your kit here. This kit fills your complete bath and shower cleaning needs and makes a great housewarming gift!
3. Now that you have your shower cleaning kit what should you do? Please don’t just spray a product on your expensive stone. Always do a quick test first in a inconspicuous area with any cleaning product.
4. Now that your product has passed the test, how should you use it? Always spray a cleaner, staring at the bottom of the shower and work your way up. Never spray any cleaner in the middle or at the top of the shower this can cause run or drip lines that can be hard to remove.
We were recently asked: “Can you wax a tiled shower to prevent scum build up”
No wax is bad anywhere in your home but even worse in a shower. Wax and grout do not mix in a short time the wax will get dirty and need removed. This will require cutting the grout out and reinstalling new grout. Chemical strippers can not remove wax 100% from grout. It’s just not worth it, and will wax even stop the soap scum to start with, I have no idea, but probably not. It would be a lot beter to buy a good soap film remover or stop using bar soap.

Now all about mildew
Mildew in grout and on stone can be a real problem. Cleaning it with the wrong products can damage your stone. This photo shows a bathroom floor that just looks a little dirty. But the homeowner in south hills wasn’t able to get it clean. I came and did a test and the floor and I couldn’t get it to clean up. What was wrong, not the cleaning products or method but the source of the problem was not what it looked like. .
After taking a closer look, I noticed that the darkness in the grout wasn’t from dirt but it was mildew. Using a mildew cleaner for natural stone I was able to remove the darkness on contact with the mildew cleaner.
